Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Brings Exhibits to Life

The new virtual reality (VR) exhibit, Virtual Fort Myers: The Past Meets the Present, brings the fort alive in a fully immersive 3D experience. Visitors to the IMAG History and Science Center will experience the place where soldiers and early settlers of Southwest Florida slept, ate, and kept watch over the fort. Guests will use their own hands to interact with the environment, just like those who originally resided there.

The IMAG History and Science Center’s App is easily downloaded to smartphones to deliver unique VR and augmented reality (AR) experiences with the assistance of Google Cardboard. The app currently provides two VR experiences, including a diving expedition to the USS Mohawk Reef off the coast of Sanibel Island, and a climb to the top of IMAG’s iconic water tower to take in panoramic views of surrounding scenery. The AR experiences include viewing life-like images of the mammals represented by IMAG’s prehistoric fossil exhibits.

With exhibits like Shaping SWFL Watersheds and Science on a Sphere, families can have a blast learning more about the earth, history, science and beyond!

Science on a Sphere is an interactive exhibit that illustrates earth sciences with a Google Earth Wall that allows people to virtually climb the world’s tallest mountains, dive into the deepest canyons, visit exciting cities, learn about exotic animals, and more.

The Shaping SWFL Watersheds exhibit is an interactive, augmented reality sandbox generating live topographical maps and fluid dynamics in real time.
