Myakka River State Park

Experience Florida’s unspoiled wilderness, just minutes from the beach a trip to Myakka River State Park yields a wealth of outdoor encounters - from canoeing and bicycling, to fishing and birding as well as miles of nature trails. The Myakka River, designated as the state’s only "Florida Wild and Scenic River", flows through the park-one of the largest and oldest in the state, covering 57 square miles.

With the world's two largest airboats, the Gator Gal and the Myakka Maiden - both capable of taking 73 passengers - Myakka Safari Tours will take you to see gators up close. You'll also encounter lots of birds, gorgeous native plants and more gators. They operate seven days a week and are in the heart of the Park, which is located nine miles east of I-75 on State Road 72.

Tours are narrated and operate year-round. Gator activity is best in winter when the critters sun themselves. The leathery beasts get so hot in the afternoon summer sun that they get the urge to submerge. If you’d prefer to stay on dry land, drive or bike The Scenic Drive, a 7- mile drive winding through the park. It will take you through shady hammocks, grassy marshes and along Upper Lake. Then you can take in the Canopy Walkway and get a bird’s eye view from 25 feet above the ground on the 85 foot long suspension bridge and climb the 74 foot tower before descending. With over 39 miles of hiking trails you’re sure to experience the wildlife and natural beauty of the Sarasota area. Bike, kayak and canoe rentals are available.
