England's Most Visited Historic Attraction
The Tower of London is a definite "Must Do"! You'll need at least half a day to enjoy everything the Tower has to offer, especially in the busy summer when you encounter lines to enter some of the more popular buildings, especially the Crown Jewels. Not to worry; the wait is softened by the showing of rare color footage of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, where she wore some of the jewels you are about to see.
The Yeoman Warders (known as Beefeaters), in bright red and black uniforms, offer great 60-minute guided tours. As you enter the Tower grounds a sign will tell you when the next tour leaves (every 30 minutes). The tour gives you access to some areas you could not go on your own, and the guides are informative, humorous and captivating.
Be sure to visit the White Tower and see the displays of armor and collection of historic weapons. Audio and visual effects at the Bloody Tower and Beauchamp Tower tell you about the prisoners who have been held at the Tower, and you can read inscriptions they have carved into the walls.
See if you can spot all the ravens that roam at the Tower ... they all have names and a different colored band around their leg for identification. They have guarded the Tower for centuries. Legend has it if they ever leave, the White Tower would crumble so their wings are clipped. Be careful, they bite!
The Tower offers unique shopping opportunities and an excellent gift shop across from the entrance. Pick up a souvenir you cannot get anywhere else in the world!
The closest Tube train stop is Tower Hill, then follow the signs to the Tower only a few minutes walk away. The entry fee is £16 for adults and £9.50 for children five to 15, check locally for a family package price. This fee includes entry to most areas of the Tower and the 60-minute guided tour.
The Tower is open:
March through October: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday,
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday
November through February: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday.
