Sports, London-style: Cricket, Football, Horse Racing and Rugby!
If you'd like to learn more about popular sports in Britain, you'll need to begin with soccer (called football everywhere except the United States). It is by far the most dominant sport in Europe ask almost anybody their favorite team. The season runs late August through mid May, and most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays and 2 to 3 nights per week. You can find games on TV most days. Unfortunately it may be difficult to see one of London's top teams; good teams have a large season ticket base so getting a ticket is almost impossible. Some of the less popular Premier League clubs are easier to see, and you may be able to buy tickets on the Charlton, Fulham or West Ham's Web sites.
If you are curious about cricket, you can visit Lord's Cricket Ground, "The home of cricket." It's a short walk from St. Johns Wood Station. This establishment offers excellent tours with history and behind-the-scenes action, and if you're here in summer, just go to a game. It will cost you about £12 for a "county" game, which are usually sparsely attended.
If you would like a "flutter on the horses" head for one of a number of race courses near London including Ascot, Epsom, Lingfield Park, and Sandown Park. Your concierge can help you with schedules and travel to the course, and most are close to train stations. If you would rather place a bet and watch on TV, off-track betting shops are everywhere in London. You can bet on almost anything!
Rugby is the other sport that can draw big crowds the best place to see a game is Twickenham. Ask your hotel concierge to check game schedules and secure tickets, which are usually not difficult to get unless its an International match.
